November -Deepavali festival

Deepavali is celebrated regardless of ethnical, social, religious and class differences to ward off darkness of evil and to welcome the light of fortune and prosperity. Deepavali means “the Festival of Lights” and is a time marked by homes and other buildings being lit up with traditional clay lamps to invite Laxmi, the Goddess of wealth. Like every other festive occasion, people decorate their houses, buy new clothes, give gifts and Deepavali has its own unique means of making merriment. As a part of many rituals, Haven and special Puja are performed by wearing new clothes. People enjoy the celebration by burning colorful crackers, and Beautiful images made of sugar crystals are served as sweets on this day. This celebration is not confined to Hindus or Tamils in Sri Lanka because it is an occasion of victory of good over evil. Fireworks, festivals, gatherings, parties, the happenings are endless.
