Poson is a significant religious festival which is celebrated by Buddhists in the month of June. Poson Poya is noteworthy to Sri Lankan Buddhists as the day on which Emperor Asoka’s son, Arahant Mahinda, introduced Buddhism to the island in the 3rd century B.C. during the reign of King Devanam Piyatissa. With this legend Mihintale has become the main site for festive activities during Poson and many locals and foreigners visit Mihintale during this season to perform religious rites as well as for leisure. Buddhist families decorate their homes with coloured lights and lanterns. Pandols are beautiful sights glistening at night. Devotional songs are sung by Buddhists. . Dansal (alms-giving stalls) to be seen everywhere. Poson poya day is considered as a very important day, second only to Vesak day.
